Who we are
The Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition team is small but might, led by our fearless leader Terry Moran, who has been working in the YouthBuild movement for more than 30 years. Terry got his start in YouthBuild as the Director at YouthBuild New Bedford in 1994 where he served for five years before he became the Director of State Policy Development at YouthBuild Global. Terry has be the Executive Director of the Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition since 2011, helping grow and sustain the number of programs in Massachusetts.
The original concept of a statewide Coalition was developed on a flight back from the National YouthBuild conference in California with a discussion between Jackie Gelb, Executive Director of YouthBuild Boston and Terry in January of 1996.

YouthBuild Boston, YouthBuild Just-A-Start, YouthBuild Lawrence, YouthBuild Lowell, YouthBuild Fitchburg, and YouthBuild New Bedford held their first meeting in February 1996.
At that first meeting, the programs unanimously agreed to move forward with the development of the Massachusetts YouthBuild Coalition.
The first YouthBuild Day at the State House took place in March of 1996.
The initial YouthBuild request was a line item in the amount of $2 million. $500,000 was appropriated in the FY 97 budget and state YouthBuild funding began.
MYBC is the only YouthBuild State Coalition in the United States to have secured continuous state funding since 1996. Because of continuous state funding, Massachusetts is the only state that has never had a program close for financial reasons and has grown from the original six programs to 11 with more potentially on the way!
Coalition Growth
Additional programs were developed and joined the Coalition in Brockton, Springfield, Worcester, Quincy, and Holyoke.
The line item, with the additional programs had grown to $2.3 million by FY 01 and sustained until 2002 when Gov. Swift vetoed the line item for the FY 03 budget.
The Coalition decided not to request allocation for FY 04.
However, legislators insisted that the line item be funded in the budget, restoring the $500,000 that started with eight years prior.
Governor Romney also vetoed the line item, however that veto was overridden by a vote of 123 to 14 in the House and 45 to 5 in the Senate. This was a start on rebuilding the line item.
The Coalition added a full-time staff member.
The Holyoke program closed and the Old Colony Y opened a second program in Fall River.
YouthBuild North Shore joined as the 11th member, serving young people in Salem and Lynn.
LearningWorks YouthBuild became a non-voting member in 2020.
As of FY20, the line item has held steady at $3 million thanks to strong support from our Representatives and Senators at the State House!
