In a community that has struggled through many barriers to success, we would like to take the time to highlight their accomplishments. Located in the Essex County of northeastern Massachusetts lies an alternative education program called YouthBuild Lawrence. This unique program not only strives to be the change you want to see in the world, but also to build yourself while in your community.

YouthBuild helps supports youth age 16-24 to change their life path. They not only assist with academic achievement in obtaining a GED or diploma , but also job placement, constructions kills, education credentials and youth professional development. 50% of the student’s time is spent receiving on-site training. This year’s YouthBuild graduates were the core foundation in revitalizing a low-income resident house in the city of Lawrence. Friday, June 28, 2012 was a glorious day in the city of Lawrence. YouthBuild graduated twenty-two students at the Lawrence Family Development Charter School on 34 West Street. Staff, family and friends gathered together for their support.

One of the highlights of the day’s ceremony was when Stefan Nutter, shy and quiet young man stepped out of his shell to speak in front of his classmates, friends, and family. His mother was so proud in the back of the room that she yelled “that’s my boy, Stefan! I love you!” Stefan replied, “I love you mommy”. Prior to the ceremony YouthBuild staff organized a Hispanic dinner of Spanish rice and chicken with refreshments and a graduate congratulations cake to celebrate the accomplishments of the students.

Guest speaker, Carlos Campos, a local entrepreneur was able to come and speak to the graduates. Awards were announced in categories such as outstanding leadership and most improved students. We are so proud of everyone’s hard work and dedication. An Indian monk, Swami Vivekananda once gave some words of wisdom, he said “Take one idea, make that idea your life- think of it, dream of it, live on that
idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success. The Coalition wishes YouthBuild Lawrence the best success for their future.
