The Construction Teacher of LearningWorks YouthBuild (LWYB) is the vocational instructor of a nationally accredited program working with young men and women ages 16 to 24 who have not had success in traditional school settings. RESPONSIBILITIES: (essential functions of the job)
This position contributes to the achievement of the LearningWorks YouthBuild program’s mission through some or all of the following core accountabilities:
- Manages the occupational skills training and associated curriculum of the LWYB program, and ensures that this program component meets and maintains a standard of excellence:
- Teaches the national construction certification curriculum to students in adherence with prescribed NCCER proficiency benchmarks. Administers module tests and tracks participant results, providing additional support to students where needed;
- Ensures quality instruction of a variety of construction skills including: demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, green building, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry;
- Ensures worksite safety, modeling and reinforcing proper construction techniques and all safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment;
- Assists in the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction;
- Supports the academic and leadership goals of the program by incorporating both of these into construction shop and building site activities whenever possible.
- Provides on-site supervision and guidance to students and monitors their progress and quality of work:
- Defines weekly work assignments and goals;
- Develops detailed construction plan and schedule;
- Sets and maintain high standards of classroom and jobsite behavior and academic achievement for all students.
- Provides clear and consistent feedback to students
- Assists in the development of job opportunities for trainees in conjunction with other members of LWYB staff and, where appropriate, assists students in setting career goals.
- Cultivates and maintains professional working relationships with a variety of external partners in the construction and related industries to help support LWYB’s program, students and alumni.
- Serves as an advisor to a small group of students and participates in alumni follow-up activities and community service events.
- Collaborates with the program’s Academic Teacher in a variety of classes where there may be content overlap.
- Displays the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards, and establishes open lines of communication when working with students, parents, other staff members and external partners.
- Submits student attendance, participation, grading and certificate data in a timely fashion.
- Participates as part of the staff team in the recruitment of students, the development or updating of programs and initiatives, and in the support of alumni and alumni programs.
- Attends meetings and trainings as required by LearningWorks YouthBuild and LearningWorks.
- Develops construction budget, monitors costs, and orders jobsite and shop materials and supplies.
- Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as needed
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Licensed contractor or person with demonstrated and extensive experience in construction or construction management.
- NCCER Instructor certification preferred though we will pay to train the right candidate.
- OSHA certification is strongly preferred
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or at least 2 years of demonstrated experience in education, social services, youth development or workforce development.
WORK EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- At least two (2) years of experience working with young people in education, alternative or vocational programs, workforce development, social services or similar.
- A sincere interest in working with a very diverse group of young people to help them acquire the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.
- Ability to work patiently and positively with young people who may not have experienced much success in school. Experience in effectively handling conflict.
- Ability to work both independently at times and also collaboratively as part of a team environment.
- Ability to set and consistently maintain appropriate boundaries.
- Ability to interact with students, staff and external partners in a positive and professional manner. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and consistently.
- A demonstrated commitment to both personal and professional growth. A willingness and eagerness to learn, grow and improve as an educator.
- Ability to both give and receive constructive feedback.
- An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the needs of young people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Proficiency in high school level algebra and geometry.
- A fully intact sense of humor.
- Willingness to speak to individuals and groups for the purpose of training, partnership and program promotion.
- Ability to track and leverage key relationships with local housing authorities, various other nonprofits and commercial entities that regularly interact with the program.
- Valid Maine Driver’s License. Incumbent must be able to operate a company motor vehicle to conduct LearningWorks business on a frequent basis to transport students, travel to appointments and meetings, or pick up supplies relative to the program.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- The salary range for this position is $45k-$50k annually, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications. It is a full-time, salaried position working 40 hours a week.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach Math and Science classes to prepare students (ages 16-24) for the HiSET exam.
- Plan and deliver engaging curriculum and lesson plans in coordination with other program component classes such as life skills, career readiness, construction training (e.g. math), etc.
- Manage tutoring program, coordination of tutor volunteers and connecting them with students in need of assistance, communicating through email and text.
- Maintain up to date records of student progress in Salesforce.
- Provide one-on-one tutoring for students and alumni as needed.
- Ensure safe, respectful learning environment by managing classroom culture and maintaining program expectations.
- Substitute teaching responsibilities for other classes as needed.
- Sign students up for HiSET tests, document and report their scores.
- Keep sensitive files and information in hard copy and digital formats.
- Collaborate with students and staff to determine learning styles, interests, and skills; adjust approach as needed to support individual student success.
- Help students develop communication, career, and life skills in the classroom.
- Assess student competencies and support individual education plans.
- Provide feedback to students including quarterly progress reviews.
- Coordinate and evaluate prospective students through the enrollment interview process.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and other professional development.
- Maintain professional boundaries that align with the program expectations for staff and students.
- Work as part of a dynamic team in cross component program planning and integration.
- Other duties as needed.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree.
- Two years of tutoring or teaching experience or equivalent.
- Experience teaching STEM subjects.
- Ability to teach additional subjects a plus.
- HiSET experience/knowledge preferred.
- Experience with Special Education and Reading IEPs a plus.
- Love, connection, and passion for working with the youth population.
- Ability to build authentic relationships with youth and young adults, including possessing a sense of humor.
- Experience with youth work, counseling, advocacy, group facilitation, education or support services to youth and young adults a plus.
- Strong understanding of the specialized needs of youth and young adults who may be experiencing challenges related to racism, addiction, trauma, mental health, relationship violence, and/or criminal involvement.
- Ability to observe personal and professional boundaries.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Willingness to develop skills related to the uses of commonly used technology platforms such as Google Suite, Calendly, Box.com, Salesforce, and Zoom.
- Acceptable CORI/SORI.
- Bi-lingual Spanish/English speaker a plus.
- Ability to teach and use basic technology, familiarity with Salesforce a plus.
WORK REQUIREMENTS
- This is a 37.5-hour per week hybrid remote/in-the-office position, which is entitled to full employee benefits including health, dental and retirement.
- All employees and long-term consultants are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID and are required follow the organization's established COVID protocols.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
- The starting annual salary range is $50,000-$58,000.
- In addition to a competitive salary, Just A Start offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, life, short-term disability, and long-term disability insurance, 20 Paid Time Off days in the first year, 13 paid holidays, 1 day of volunteer time off, employee assistance program and a 401k savings plan with a 3% employer contribution after 6 months of employment.
