RESPONSIBILITIES: (essential functions of the job)
This position contributes to the achievement of the LearningWorks YouthBuild program’s mission through some or all of the following core accountabilities:
- Manages the occupational skills training and associated curriculum of the LWYB program, and ensures that this program component meets and maintains a standard of excellence:
- Teaches the national construction certification curriculum to students in adherence with prescribed NCCER proficiency benchmarks. Administers module tests and tracks participant results, providing additional support to students where needed;
- Ensures quality instruction of a variety of construction skills including: demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, green building, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry;
- Ensures worksite safety, modeling and reinforcing proper construction techniques and all safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment;
- Assists in the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction;
- Supports the academic and leadership goals of the program by incorporating both of these into construction shop and building site activities whenever possible.
- Provides on-site supervision and guidance to students and monitors their progress and quality of work:
- Defines weekly work assignments and goals;
- Develops detailed construction plan and schedule;
- Sets and maintain high standards of classroom and jobsite behavior and academic achievement for all students.
- Provides clear and consistent feedback to students
- Assists in the development of job opportunities for trainees in conjunction with other members of LWYB staff and, where appropriate, assists students in setting career goals.
- Cultivates and maintains professional working relationships with a variety of external partners in the construction and related industries to help support LWYB’s program, students and alumni.
- Serves as an advisor to a small group of students and participates in alumni follow-up activities and community service events.
- Collaborates with the program’s Academic Teacher in a variety of classes where there may be content overlap.
- Displays the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards, and establishes open lines of communication when working with students, parents, other staff members and external partners.
- Submits student attendance, participation, grading and certificate data in a timely fashion.
- Participates as part of the staff team in the recruitment of students, the development or updating of programs and initiatives, and in the support of alumni and alumni programs.
- Attends meetings and trainings as required by LearningWorks YouthBuild and LearningWorks.
- Develops construction budget, monitors costs, and orders jobsite and shop materials and supplies.
- Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as needed
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
- Licensed contractor or person with demonstrated and extensive experience in construction or construction management.
- NCCER Instructor certification preferred though we will pay to train the right candidate.
- OSHA certification is strongly preferred
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or at least 2 years of demonstrated experience in education, social services, youth development or workforce development.
WORK EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- At least two (2) years of experience working with young people in education, alternative or vocational programs, workforce development, social services or similar.
- A sincere interest in working with a very diverse group of young people to help them acquire the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.
- Ability to work patiently and positively with young people who may not have experienced much success in school. Experience in effectively handling conflict.
- Ability to work both independently at times and also collaboratively as part of a team environment.
- Ability to set and consistently maintain appropriate boundaries.
- Ability to interact with students, staff and external partners in a positive and professional manner. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and consistently.
- A demonstrated commitment to both personal and professional growth. A willingness and eagerness to learn, grow and improve as an educator.
- Ability to both give and receive constructive feedback.
- An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the needs of young people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Proficiency in high school level algebra and geometry.

- Willingness to speak to individuals and groups for the purpose of training, partnership and program promotion.
- Ability to track and leverage key relationships with local housing authorities, various other nonprofits and commercial entities that regularly interact with the program.
- Valid Maine Driver’s License. Incumbent must be able to operate a company motor vehicle to conduct LearningWorks business on a frequent basis to transport students, travel to appointments and meetings, or pick up supplies relative to the program.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- The salary range for this position is $45k-$50k annually, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications. It is a full-time, salaried position working 40 hours a week.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management and Special Initiatives
- Day-to-day management of Youth Program operations including maintaining student records, program vendor coordination and billing, program supply inventories, and program calendar project management in partnership with component leads
- Lead planner for key program events such as orientation, graduation, college and career field trips, community service, community and holiday celebrations, and more
- Maintain building operations with an eye for integrating DEI, college and career readiness, and academics to make YouthBuild a welcoming, inclusive, appealing space for students
- Oversee food security through community partnerships and community meals to ensure students have healthy, nutritious and delicious meal options
- In close coordination with the Manager of Learning & Evaluation and YouthBuild leadership team, collect, monitor and track student demographics, attendance dashboards, services received, academic learning gains and employment placement data in Salesforce and funder databases
- Support the Assistant Director with planning and implementing student facing outings, college tours, leadership opportunities and other special initiatives
- Collaborate with the Youth Employment Specialist, Construction Project Manager, and Assistant Director to manage existing employer partnerships, agreements, and cultivate new relationships.
- Work with Assistant Director and Director to develop and implement needed professional development and leadership training opportunities for a team of 10+ staff
- Develop, adapt, and track outreach and recruitment strategies, marketing materials, and use of social media that target youth who best meet program criteria
- Oversee application and enrollment process, including information sessions, interviews, academic assessment, and eligibility documents
- Manage multiple youth program orientations throughout the year for new YouthBuild students
- Maintain current community partnerships for recruitment referrals and employer partnerships across the Metro North Region including leading information sessions, job fairs, and employment opportunities
- Drive innovation in alumni outreach and programming, including a leadership role for the YouthBuild policy council, and alumni network with support from Summer VISTA and/or alumni engagement coordinator
- Ensure student files are stored and maintained in compliance with funding sources
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree desired and/or a minimum of three (3) years of related experience with program management, outreach and related administrative activities
- Love, connection, sense of humor and passion for working with young people
- Equity centered professional who is able to understand the systemic barriers that opportunity youth may face
- Critical attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to prioritize, test, build systems and maximize resources within and outside the agency/program to achieve program outcomes
- Strong verbal and written communicator
- Awareness or direct experience with strengths-based or trauma-informed practices
- Driver’s license and willingness to carry out program related transportation and operational activities
- Experience working with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and video conferencing products
- Knowledge of data management software/best practices; Salesforce experience is preferred
- Ability to work flexible hours outside of Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm schedule as needed

WORK REQUIREMENTS
- This is a 37.5-hour per week hybrid remote/in-the-office position, which is entitled to full employee benefits including health, dental and retirement.

- Starting Salary ($55-65K Annual)
