​TWO OPENINGS IN BOSTON

ELA H.E.D. Instructor, YouthBuild Boston
Reports to: MS H.E.D. Instructor

Job Summary: The H.E.D. Instructor is responsible for providing direction for academic instruction at YouthBuild Boston and working directly with students to teach, support and inspire program participants to meet their educational goals.

Responsibilities:
Direct Instruction (22 hrs./wk.)
  • Create and teach detailed, engaging lessons in reading, writing and social studies (including civics, history and economics) in a remote or hybrid setting, as state and city rules  demand, to prepare students to achieve passing scores on their HiSET Exams and earn the High School Equivalency Diploma.  When appropriate, include content pertaining to the building trades and/or service learning,
  • Utilize various teaching methods to develop/adapt curricula and activities to meet needs of students at various stages of academic and behavioral readiness.
  • Utilize computers/technology to enhance learning.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops for various Mental Toughness and Life Skills workshops with appropriate staff as necessary, particularly technology assessments, service learning, and the history of service and project management.
  • Lead planning for and, when possible, attend, field trips with students as appropriate.
Planning/Assessment (12 hrs./wk.) 
  • Create, research and refine detailed lesson plans to teach social studies, reading and writing and respond to students’ unique learning styles and levels of progress. 
  • Assess students’ proficiencies, identify gaps, measure progress and implement plans to address problem areas.  Share written assessments with students monthly.
  • Participate in meetings with H.E.D. and Vocational Instructors and Case Managers to coordinate lesson plans and discuss student progress.
  • Participate in/contribute to systems for clear, concise and timely communication with case managers and construction team about program participants.
  • Attend and participate regularly in staff meetings, trainings, retreats and events.
  • Student Intake Process:  Set up and proctor TABE 11 & 12 Online pre- and posttests for BTE and PA students as needed
Evaluation (6 hrs./wk.)
  • Grade and evaluate student work material to measure benchmarking progress and readiness for Hi-SET test taking
  • Assess effectiveness and utilize assessment data to continually  improve teaching and student outcomes.
  • Track students’ classroom attendance, test scores and grades and share written evaluations and assessments with team members and senior managers as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • The ELA H.E.D. Instructor should have the vision, passion and maturity to ensure students experience a safe, welcoming and challenging academic environment that inspires them to achieve educational gains and proficiency.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required
  • 1 - 2 years’ teaching experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong administrative and time management skills

Physical Work Environment:
  • The position will require moving around classroom, navigating desks and chairs, writing on white boards, manipulating a projector and screen as needed.
  • Candidate must be able to stand and sit for considerable amounts of time to teach, record grades, do computer work and make copies of lesson materials.
  • Must be able to bend to reach lower drawers and book shelves as well as reach up to higher book shelves and file cabinets
  • Classrooms include two on the 2nd floor, as well as 1st floor computer lab and multi-purpose space and a 3rd floor conference room

Carpentry Instructor, YouthBuild Boston
Reports to: Project Superintendent

OUR ORGANIZATION:
Our Mission is to empower and assist underserved young people from the Boston area with the essential social, vocational, academic, and life skills necessary to navigate a positive pathway to self- sufficiency and neighborhood responsibility. While YBB promotes the core values of youth development and community service, it stands out as an innovative non-profit offering a hands-on approach to building trades training. Our programs provide vocational education, counseling, and other life skills training that readily strengthen and prepare students for the workforce upon graduation. We focus on the assets of each individual to enable young people to navigate a pathway to a meaningful livelihood. We connect young people to their peers, family, and community in a positive and supportive way.

Our programs include:
  1. Building Trades Exploration: This 6-9 month academic and building trades program is for young people aged 17-24 who do not have a high school diploma. Participants gain exposure to construction and landscaping safety, tools, materials, techniques, and methods while taking HiSet prep classes for their high school equivalency test.
  2. Pre-Apprentice: This 15-week program is for young people aged 18-25 who already have their high school diploma or equivalent and are interested in starting a career in the building trades. Students gain field experience on real construction sites to ensure that they are ready for employment in the field upon graduation.
  3. The Designery: These 7 to 10-week sessions are geared toward high school students who want an enriching after-school experience. Students are paid a bi-weekly stipend while they hone fundamental graphic, modeling, and design-thinking skills through real design projects for non-profit clients around the city.

​POSITION SUMMARY:
The Carpentry Instructor is responsible for working with trainees to gain competencies in the carpentry trade, including gut rehabilitation. The Carpentry Instructor also works collaboratively with other program staff to ensure programmatic integrity through skill and leadership development.
 
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Teach carpentry skills, including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, building maintenance, etc. to YBB trainees.
  • Implement carpentry training curriculum.
  • Teach proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Maintain and practice safety and safe working conditions.
  • Inform Project Superintendent about material needs for job site.
  • Complete and submit job reports to supervisor: daily tasks, accident, tool checklist and job attendance. 
  • Assist in personal and vocational counseling and development of trainees. 
  • Assist in leadership skill development of trainees in conjunction with other staff.
  • Assist in monitoring student time; punching in and out on the construction site.
  • Monitor all tools and equipment used on the job.
  • Assist in evaluation of student knowledge, skills and competencies in construction.
  • Adhere to all regulatory and contractual requirements on the construction site.
  • Assume responsibility over the construction site in absence of the Project Superintendent by maintaining production safety and interfacing with subcontractors and inspectors.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  • Adhere to all personnel policies and contractual agreements.
  • Accept additional responsibilities as needed after assessment, evaluation and mutual agreement between employee and supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • H.S. Diploma/G.E.D. required 
  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • Minimum 6 years experience working in the field
  • Ability to interpret blue prints.
  • Professionalism, maturity and the ability to work as a team and independently
  • Strong working skills and knowledge from framing to finishing. 
  • Ability to lead by example and motivate others.

Assistant Education Instructor, YouthBuild North Shore CDC

The YouthBuild Assistant Education Instructor (YAEI) will be a motivated self-starter that is passionate about educating alternative youth learners and positive youth development, able to pay close attention to detail and work in a collaborative supportive environment to help underserved Opportunity Youth ages 16-24 work towards success and self-sufficiency. The YAEI will work closely with the Educational Coordinator in supporting educational needs of the program participants.  The YAEI will have the opportunity to lead classroom instruction, design curriculum and develop lesson plans that will encourage a supportive learning environment for alternative learners.

Specific Duties
  • Teach basic adult education to students with varying academic levels integrating reading, math language arts, social studies and science
  • Develop innovative project-based lessons inclusive of critical and creative thinking exploring themes of social justice, career readiness and life skill development.
  • Assess individual student progress and adapt curriculum and lesson plans according to the individual learning needs of the students
  • Responsible for record keeping and organizing student files regularly 
  • Serve as an active participant and educational expert in our diverse offering of programmatic activities across program components

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field.

YouthBuild Construction Teacher, LearningWorks YouthBuild - Portland, ME

Overview and Position Summary: 

The Construction Teacher of LearningWorks YouthBuild (LWYB) is the vocational instructor of a nationally accredited program working with young men and women ages 16 to 24 who have not had success in traditional school settings. The Construction Teacher is part of a dynamic team of professionals who, together, manage components of a comprehensive academic, vocational, and career pathways training program. This position provides both classroom-based and job-site specific vocational training and supervision to students of the LWYB program.  This role also includes overseeing LWYB’s involvement in the construction or rehab of low-income housing properties.

This position contributes to the accomplishment of the Agency’s mission through: planning and managing the jobsite and construction training components of the LWYB program, working directly with students both in groups and individually, cultivating and sustaining external partnerships in construction and related fields, and performing occasional administrative duties such as budgeting, data entry and expense monitoring.

Work is performed, reviewed, and evaluated under the supervision of the Director of LearningWorks YouthBuild.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 
This position contributes to the achievement of the LearningWorks YouthBuild program’s mission through some or all of the following core accountabilities:
  • Manages the occupational skills training and associated curriculum of the LWYB program, and ensures that this program component meets and maintains a standard of excellence:
    • Teaches the national construction certification curriculum to students in adherence with prescribed NCCER proficiency benchmarks. Administers module tests and tracks participant results, providing additional support to students where needed;
    • Ensures quality instruction of a variety of construction skills including: demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry;
    • Ensures worksite safety, modeling and reinforcing proper construction techniques and all safety procedures including proper use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment;
    • Assists in the evaluation of student knowledge and skills in construction;
    • Supports the academic and leadership goals of the program by incorporating both of these into construction shop and building site activities whenever possible.
  • Provides on-site supervision and guidance to students and monitors their progress and quality of work:
    • Defines weekly work assignments and goals;
    • Develops detailed construction plan and schedule;
    • Sets and maintain high standards of classroom and jobsite behavior and academic achievement for all students.
    • Provides regular clear and consistent feedback to students
  • Assists in the development of job opportunities for trainees in conjunction with other members of LWYB staff and, where appropriate, assists students in setting career goals.
  • Cultivates and maintains professional working relationships with a variety of external partners in the construction and related industries to help support LWYB’s program, students and alumni.
  • Serves as an advisor to a small group of students and participates in alumni follow-up activities and community service events.
  • Collaborates with the program’s Academic Teacher in a variety of classes where there may be content overlap.
  • Displays the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards, and establishes open lines of communication when working with students, parents, other staff members and external partners.
  • Submits student attendance, participation, grading and certificate data in a timely fashion.
  • Participates as part of the staff team in the recruitment of students, the development or updating of programs and initiatives, and in the support of alumni and alumni programs.
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required by LearningWorks YouthBuild and LearningWorks.
  • Develops construction budget, monitors costs, and orders jobsite and shop materials and supplies.
  • Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Licensed contractor or person with demonstrated and extensive experience in construction or construction management.
  • NCCER instructor certification strongly preferred, though we will pay to train the right candidate.
  • OSHA certification strongly preferred.

WORK EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
  • At least two (2) years’ experience working with young people in education, alternative or vocational programs, workforce development, social services or similar.
  • A sincere interest in working with a very diverse group of young people to help them acquire the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.
  • Ability to work patiently and positively with young people who may not have experienced much success in school.  Experience in effectively handling conflict.
  • Ability to work both independently at times and also collaboratively as part of a team environment.
  • Ability to set and consistently maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Ability to interact with students, staff and external partners in a positive and professional manner.  Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and consistently.
  • A demonstrated commitment to both personal and professional growth.  A willingness and eagerness to learn, grow and improve as an educator.
  • Ability to both give and receive constructive feedback.
  • An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the needs of young people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in high school level algebra and geometry.
  • A fully intact sense of humor.
  • Willingness to speak to individuals and groups for the purpose of training, partnership and program promotion.
  • Ability to track and leverage key relationships with local housing authorities, various other nonprofits and commercial entities that regularly interact with the program.
  • Valid Maine Driver’s License. Incumbent must be able to operate a company motor vehicle to conduct LearningWorks business on a frequent basis to transport students, travel to appointments and meetings, or pick up supplies relative to the program.
  • Typical schedule is 7:30 to 3:30 M-F, with flexibility to meet program and staff needs as required.

Compensation and Benefits:
  • This is a regular, full time 40 hour a week, non-exempt position. The hourly rate for this position is $17, based on experience and skills.
