ACADEMIC PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR
JUST A START YOUTHBUILD
JOB PURPOSE:
The Academic Program Manager (APM) oversees the Academic Component of YouthBuild, which prepares students to take their High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) to promote a path toward a career and post-secondary education. This position supervises the STEM Instructor, teaches Humanities/ELA classes for approximately 8 hours weekly, provides one-on-one tutoring, and works closely with other YouthBuild component managers and staff to identify student needs and build supportive strategies.

KEY JOB ACTIVITIES:
Classroom Instruction
- Develops dynamic lesson plans, pedagogy and teaches HiSET ELA (reading and writing) and Social Studies subjects weekly to cultivate student comprehension and critical thinking
- Acknowledges and effectively leverages the intersectionality of student success in the classroom with other YB program components such as life skills, case management, career readiness, etc.
- Builds trauma-informed, inclusive, and trust-based learning environment with classroom management strategies to support students with IEPs and who may be court-involved
- Follows up with students to coordinate 1:1 tutoring by subject as necessary
- Understands and aligns student personal and career goals with academic, HiSET, and post-secondary educational goals
- Builds and maintains effective classroom management policies for academic classes, manages classroom schedules, learning objectives, scope and sequence, and tutoring
- Administers, schedules, and critically evaluates TABE, HiSET, and other academic assessments with an eye for meeting individual and cohort student learning needs simultaneously
- Supervises and coaches the STEM Instructor for consistent administration of learning goals, classroom norms, culture, and best practices to meet all funder and program student outcomes
- Serves on the program component management team to effectively advocate for academic program design changes while collaborating with fellow managers to build supportive student success plans
- Assesses and communicates academic progress with students and co-creates action steps in progress reviews and transition meetings to pass the HiSET
Administration and Outcomes
- Collect, track, and monitor all relevant data such as student academic standing, progress, and achievements, and use information to measure impact and make informed programmatic decisions
- Provide timely and strengths-based student updates in YB team meetings in service of their goals and positive student exit outcomes
- Inventories, maintains, and organizes classroom materials, supplies, and instructional materials for all academic classes in collaboration with the Director and Program Operations Manager
- Documents attendance, assessment scores, learning gains, and other necessary grant information on Salesforce and to the Program Operations Manager as well as Learning and Evaluation Manager
- Supports students with unique leadership learning opportunities such as speeches, student presentations at student orientation, and State House Day.

EDUCATION & SKILLS:

- Classroom experience teaching ELA (reading and writing) as well as Social Studies subjects; preference given to HiSET subject instructors
- Familiarity with alternative education, project-based learning and School-to-Career practices, state-wide tests in subject area (TABE, HiSET, MCAS)
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience and passion working with the young people / opportunity youth
- Experience supervising or managing staff preferred
- Must have a student-centered, relationship-based approach when it comes to instruction and learning
- Student-centered instructional practices and familiarity with trauma-informed or restorative justice approaches
- Extremely well organized, able to prioritize work, zoom in and out as necessary, build outcome-based processes and systems to achieve program goals and outcomes
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with diversity of identities and experience across the staff and student body
- Sense of humor, humility and ability to build strong rapport with youth
- Ability to work flexible hours outside of Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm schedule if needed
- Must pass CORI/SORI background checks
- Bi-lingual Spanish/English speaker a plus
- Ability to use basic technology (Google Drive, Microsoft Office Products); Box.com, familiarity with Salesforce a plus
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work/lived experience required; Master’s degree in Education (or related field) a plus
