                                  MYBC Goes Green

                                  YouthBuild Quincy -   Has partnered with the Quincy Housing Authority to renovate over 170 low-income housing units owned by QHA in the Riverview section of Germantown. They have helped replace roofs, insulation, siding, doors and windows, making the units energy efficient in accordance with HUD/ QHA energy compliance standards. 

                                  YouthBuild Lawrence - I
                                  s about to begin construction on 2 energy efficient houses. In the past, YB Lawrence has participated in a Green Jobs round-table and partnered on a community service project with MIT@Lawrence.

                                  YouthBuild Worcester - Is one of four national recipients of a 3 year, $100,000 pass-through grant from YB USA to partner with Saint-Gobain in promoting green building techniques and construction of energy efficient affordable housing.                                   YouthBuild Just-A-Start (Cambridge/ Chelsea)- Is integrating weatherization and energy efficiency training into their HBI Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate Training curriculum in construction. A WalMart Green Fellows grant enabled YBJAS to purchase an insulation blower and other weatherization tools. The current construction project is the rehabilitation of a single-family home to Energy Star standards.

                                  YouthBuild New Bedford- Enabled by a grant to the city of New Bedford from NSTAR’s Community Mobilization Initiative, is working in conjunction with Greener Resources, Inc. to perform the retrofitting work for 50 residential buildings and 4 residential/ commercial (5-20 units) buildings for the pilot initiative.

                                  YouthBuild Brocktonand the Brockton Housing Authority- Have incorporated Green building practices including, among other things: utilizing insulation foam around all windows, doors, and ducts; spraying cellulose insulation made from recycled newspaper, and utilizing energy efficient appliances. Each of the 12 new single-family homes previously constructed by the program were Energy Star certified.

                                  YouthBuild Boston- Has constructed 2 affordable housing units that meet LEED certification requirements, one of which was certified LEED Gold. Green construction techniques utilized include: green landscaping including green roofs, and co-generation heating among others. YB Boston is also becoming a certified retrofitter, performing small to mid-scale weatherization projects.

                                  In partnership with Springfield Partners for Community Action, YouthBuild Springfield is offering Green job training and education classes with a focus on weatherization and energy efficiency. Students attend these Green classes for 2.5 hours each week, after which they will begin observation and hands-on work in the field.

                                  YouthBuild Lowell-Recently received a $160,000 grant from the Commonwealth Corporation that will enable 22 students to take certification classes in weatherization, green installation, and other aspects of the green building industry at Middlesex Community College. YB Lowell also received a MassCEC Clean Energy Equipment Grant to further their weatherization efforts. Read the Mass.gov "Energy Smarts" blog post on their progress as of February 2011.

                                  Supported in part by a Green Capacity Building grant and $25,000 in matching funds from a WalMart Green Fellows grant, YouthBuild Fall River will be the site of the first micro-factory manufacturing LED lights in the United States. YB FR has already hired one YB graduate and 1 production coordinator for this initiative, and plans to hire 5 additional graduate employees within the next 8 months.
